Washington Approves Renewables

Start up the wind turbines in the Northwest. The voters of Washington state have approved (barely) a renewable portfolio standard that requires utilities to generate energy from renewable sources.

Although the initial requirement of 3 percent renewables by 2012 may not seem like much, according to law firm Stoel Rives, the state currently uses very little wind or solar power. Utilities will also be required to conserve energy or face fines of $50 per megawatt hour.

Washington becomes the 22nd state with a RPS, creating job opportunities for solar and wind manufacturers and installers. Let's see how long it takes for the other 28 to follow suit.

I think this is a great idea, just very impractical based on the tonecelogihs out there today. In the alternatives listed for the starting point, about 90% was firewood. The true alternatives (without nuclear and hydro) were tiny. At no point does anyone discuss the cost differences between the alternatives (which is why they are not growing today) and fossil fuel. Anyone who reads this report should also read the ExxonMobil report on fuel sources for 2030 which includes renewables. I think this new report is wishful thinking until new tonecelogihs that we do not know about are developed. I am pro-renewable, but I don't see the technology that is out there today coming any where close to the difference between the Exxon and the new report and I am in the renewables field.
