Villians: Rotten Apple Takes Heat
Apple's iPod may be the darling of the consumer electronics industry, but the company continues to get hammered for its non-sustainable manufacturing. The latest organization to criticize Apple is Greenpeace, which has set up a website that highlights (or better, lowlights) Apple's use of toxic materials in its computers and entertainment products.
Greenpeace ranked Apple near the bottom of its list in an environmental report, and now it is taking its message online.
Of course we can't expect consumer electronics to be made from hemp and soy, but companies that don't pay attention to their sustainability record will eventually have to pay attention to environmental groups and consumers.
I would think that Mac enthusiasts (and company employees) would tend to be interested in sustainability, so they should be held to a higher standard by users than say, button-down IBM. And since you expect to pay more for an Apple product anyway, spending a few extra bucks on making products Earth friendly shouldn't affect the bottom line.

I wonder if Microsoft's Zune MP3 (due out this christmas) player is any better.
