GPS Helps Organizations Get on Track
The results are staggering. The city of Islip, New York saved nearly 14,000 gallons of gas over a three-month period from the previous year, after GPS devices were installed in city fleets. Denver also noticed a decrease in vehicle usage after its 76 vehicles newly equipped with GPS were driven 5,000 fewer miles than the unequipped fleet the year before. Why is that?
Employees realized they could no longer waste company time and gas while on the clock. But what isn't specifically stated is that this also reduced pollution and oil by eliminating wasteful driving.
GPS units may annoy disgruntled employees, but cities and companies find efficiency, save money and have proof that a vehicle was on course in case of disputes – all while using less fuel and energy. Delaware believes it will recoup its initial expenses for the units that cost about $425 each in about three years. This sure seems like a worthy investment for any organization or company with driving fleets.
