Environmental Sustainability a Growing Trend for Business Journalism

I once had an environmental journalist tell me that he was always happiest when his articles would end up in the business sections of the newspaper instead of the science or environment sections. That way, more people would probably read it, he said.

I think he was on to something. It seems like sometimes people bypass science or environmental journalism because it's either too technical or scientific or liberal. But the environment falls into every category of news because it affects everything, so it's great that business has picked up on the abundance of environmental stories that pervade the business world.

The number of green business stories published in the nation's 10 largest newspapers in 2007 has already doubled last year's total, according to a study released by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism. While conducting the survey, business editors told the center that they run a story with a green angle as often as once a week, and none felt that interest has peaked. It's not surprising considering how venture capitalists and start-ups are really taking interest in green and clean technologies. From Silicon Valley to beyond, the business world has figured out how to profit off technologies and ventures that may actually turn global warming around and help protect the environment. And that makes a mighty fine story.
