Loving the XO Laptop

The non-profit One Laptop Per Child program is a perfect example of how clean technology can be used for altruistic purposes. Its XO laptop was developed to be used primarily by children in developing countries, and is chock full of environmental attributes.

The small, durable and waterproof laptop uses one-tenth the power required to run traditional laptops, lasts longer and is recyclable. A small solar panel, a foot pedal and a pull-string charger – all included with the laptop – can power the machine. The laptop contains minimal toxic materials and has qualified for Energy Star's 4.0 Category A, the program's highest rating.

And it only costs about $100. The company just made its first deal with Uruguay, and hopes to make more direct sales to governments.

The laptop runs on Linux software, although Microsoft is developing a Windows version for the laptop.

It may not have a ton of space or run a bunch of fancy programs, but it should remind us that green technology doesn't need to be expensive or only for the rich. Sometimes simple, clean design is all we need.
