Hybrid Utility Trucks to Cut Fuel Use in Half

New hybrid technology company Azure Dynamics is developing utility trucks that can cut emissions and fuel consumption by half or more.

The company's "secret sauce" is software that manages the energy draw from batteries and the gas engine in parallel. Azure Dynamics is developing solutions for both gasoline and diesel engines.

Utility trucks are a great match for hybrid vehicles since they do considerable stop and start driving and sometimes idle for long periods of time when workers use the onboard equipment.

Azure is in testing with prototype vehicles, including vehicles that are being evaluated by FedEx, Purolator, and Florida Power and Light. Parent company FPL Group is a contender for the title of greenest utility on Earth by making investments in solar energy and calling for swift action on climate change. Utilities such as FPL group are mastering the balance between sustainable business policies and enhancing profits. They are coming out of the shadows from being observed as "dirty" coal companies to environmental leaders.
