Students Show Off Skills

For innovative and ambitious students, competitions give them the rare chance to show off their skills, ranging from clean tech to green building. Plus, they get real-world experience that just can't be taught in the classroom.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) just announced its new Clean Energy Entrepreneurship Prize. The top cash prize of $200,000 comes from sponsors like the U.S. Department of Energy and NSTAR Electric & Gas Corporation. Students will submit business plans for clean energy products or technologies that promote, enhance or advance energy efficiency and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

GM's Challenge X competition asks students to design cars powered by alternative energies, such as biodiesels, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, E85 ethanol and anything else they can think of. The goal is to re-engineer the Equinox to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions, while still attracting consumers.

The Solar Decathlon is the place for students and universities to pair solar energy with houses, from the design phase to building and operation. The gorgeous designs are inspirational and drool-worthy.

To get an idea of upcoming trends and technologies, or to feel optimistic for the future, check out the results of student competitions like these.
