'Hummer' Loophole Could Close

The days of businesses writing off up to $25,000 of the cost of a Hummer or Cadillac Escalade could be numbered, and it can't happen soon enough.

Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) has introduced a bill that would end the depreciation allowance for small businesses who buy the biggest SUVs on the planet.

The tax incentive pre-dates the SUV, and when written in 1984 was intended to aid farmers who needed large trucks. But since then, business owners have abused the loophole to buy SUVs over 6,000 lbs.

Good riddance to this exclusion, which provided incentive for vehicles that pollute as $25,000 buys a lot of gasoline. Previous attempts to close the loophole were stymied by the auto industry, but the Democratic Congress might be more included to pass the legislation.
