Liquid Coal Goes Down the Drain
Two energy bill amendments supporting coal to liquids as an transportation fuel failed in the Senate today. The idea of turning the U.S.' rich coal reserves into a gasoline alternative has received some support from people concerned about energy independence.
However, the concerns about increased emissions from the process doomed the bills. For coal to liquids to be close to environmentally friendly, the carbon must be sequestered underground or otherwise contained.
The energy bill will likely contain tens of millions of dollars in subsidies for fuel efficient vehicles, alternative fuels and energy efficiency by the time it is ready for a full vote.
