New York Heats Up With Biofuel
New York will begin using biofuel to heat city-owned buildings thanks to an initiative from Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Starting next year, up 30 percent of the heating oil purchased by the city will contain a minimum of 5 percent biofuel from corn and soybeans.
This is a good step forward for the city in reducing emissions, but I'm surprised that reusing cooking oil isn't part of the plan. New York's plethora of restaurants, which currently supply some reused vegetable oil to make transportation fuel could also supply plenty of fuel for heating office buildings if the economics were improved.
