Shoppers Do Care About the Environment

Half of Generation Y respondents to a recent survey said retailers' environmental policies do affect their shopping habits.

When asked whether they'd shop at a retailer more if it were environmentally friendly, 46 percent said yes while 54 percent said it wouldn't affect their behavior. Only 47 percent said they would be willing to pay more for environmentally friendly services, products or brands.

The respondents to the survey were between the ages of 18 and 30, and had shopped at Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, Express or The Gap in the 90 days prior to the survey, which was conducted by Maritz Research.

While the statistics aren't mind-blowing, smart retailers should consider upping their enviro-policies. Especially those five clothing retailers, whose profit comes mainly from non-organic cotton. Eco-friendly fashion is on the rise - partly because of all the toxic pesticides used in agriculture, 25 percent is used for the cultivation of cotton.
