SunChips Tap Solar Power

Frito-Lay hopes that you'll be more likely to buy snacks that were manufactured using renewable energy. The company has put the Green-e logo on the packaging of its SunChips line of snacks, one of the first food brands to do so.

"Including the Green-e on the SunChips line of snacks gives the brand an opportunity to communicate its commitment to support green energy, and hopefully will remind and encourage consumers to take their own small steps to make our world a brighter place," said Gannon Jones, vice president, marketing, Frito-Lay North America.

The Green-e logo is authorized by the Center for Resource Solutions, a non-profit company that sells renewable energy credits and verifies that green energy was used. Marketers have ascertained that using green power helps a brand image, and Frito-Lays participation proves that green power has been embraced by the mainstream. We'll be seeing a lot more of the Green-e logo as more companies get on board.

Frito-Lay purchased 100 percent of its energy from green energy (which I assume includes solar), and the company says it has reduced the fuel consumed per pound of snack by nearly 24 percent since 1999. The company also in installing solar concentrators for its manufacturing plant near Modesto, California.

It's about time that manufacturers and businesses that have a lot of roof space, parking lot space, and access to open spaces to use the incoming solar energy, wind energy, and other renewable energy sources they have so available. Sure, the initial investment is sort of pricey... but then, think about how much they surprising save when the normal petroleum fuel prices soar (as they are now). Their competitors who are still using petroleum fuel are still struggling to keep up and are seeing a lot more expenses in energy costs... and now the energy efficient companies will reap the benefit of their investment. Such a lesson for those other businesses and organizations!
