Burial at Sea Joins Eco-Reef
Eternal Reefs of Atlanta incorporates cremated remains into environmentally-friendly concrete reefs that provide a "habitat for fish and other forms of sea life, allowing a new ecosystem to develop."
The company provides the longitude and latitude of the remains -- which are marked by a bronze plaque. This year the company will be creating reefs off the coast of Florida, New Jersey, Maryland and South Carolina.
Families can visit to have their own "bereefment" time by diving or riding in a glass bottom boat.
I agree with cremation from an environmental standpoint and don't want to a headstone to take up space better used by nature. Burial underwater might makes sense for those with families who live along the coast as long as the reefs are as eco-friendly as advertised.
