The Rise of Eco-Labelling
Your coffee bag says fair trade, organic and environmentally friendly. Starbucks has a line of coffee that is fair-trade, and another line that is organic. Confused? Your flooring says it's green and comes from a sustainable forest. How can you tell if it's true or just hogwash?
Ecolabelling.org aims to be the judge in these cases by ruling out the bad ones. Sometimes it seems we are inundated by various shades and labels of green, with various levels of LEED building, different organic labels, Energy Star stickers, etc. The folks behind Ecolabelling.org intend to set standards to the labels to ensure verification and certification.
In a recent interview with the cofounder of the company on Greenbang, Jacob Malthouse warns that "the greenwash smackdown is coming." It's about time we set some standards for the standards.
