Esurance Leads in Green Power Purchasing
Esurance's advertising makes a lot out of the fact that the insurance company is greener because it uses less power. Well, maybe for once the advertising is true. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Esurance is one of the largest buyers of green power in the country.
With a recent purchase of nearly 4 million kilowatt hours of wind power, Esurance has officially offset 100 percent of the electricity used in each of its permanent offices nationwide. Esurance purchased its power in the form of renewable energy certificates through Carbonfund.org and from a number of wind farms in Texas. In light of that accomplishment, the EPA on Thursday inducted Esurance into the Green Power Leadership Club.
"Purchasing wind power helps our organization become more sustainable, one of our company's strategic long-term goals," said Gary Toman, Esurance's CEO, in a press release. "American consumers now rightfully expect that companies will do their part to protect our natural resources, which makes supporting clean sources of energy a sound business decision.
"As an insurance company, we are also well aware of the effects of climate change. Investing in renewable energy sources is an important step in reducing our dependence on energy sources that negatively impact our environment."
