Pacific Northwest Moves Toward Green Future
Projects like T. Boone Pickens’ massive Texas wind farm may grab more headlines, but a recent report shows the Pacific Northwest is still a clean-energy leader, both in terms of current output and potential for future growth. The region has long been considered one of the most environmentally progressive regions of the United States.
The report, produced by regional non profit Climate Solutions and green-market researchers Clean Edge, found the Pacific Northwest remains one of the most sustainable regions of the country. While the United States as a whole draws around half its energy from coal, the Northwestern states of Washington and Oregon do much better than that, environmentally speaking. Instead, hydroelectric, wind and other renewable installations meet 62 percent of the region's power demands, with 75 percent possible by 2025.
While the Northwest still suffers an outdated power grid, and lacks the massive energy firms of the Gulf Coast, or the access to capital of the Northeast, there’s still potential for 41,000 to 65,000 new jobs in a variety of sustainability-related fields.
