Toshiba Outlines Cleaner Future

Toshiba has released an English version of their green operating plan which details their Environmental Vision for 2050.

The company believes that “not only global environmental issues including climate change will be resolved, but also that all people should lead rich lifestyles” through smarter operation of the planet’s resources (Environmental Report, 2008).

Toshiba’s Environmental Report 2008 is similar to an annual report providing stakeholders, stockholders, and interested parties with information about Toshiba’s major environmental accomplishments over 2008 and its future goals. Green technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and hazardous materials are a few of the report’s highlights.

Major discussions and strategic goals are centered on energy, environmentally sensitive production processes and products, and overall environmental management. One of Toshiba's long term goals is to increase environmental efficiency by 10 percent over the next forty years.

In terms of energy, Toshiba has invested in renewable energy supplies and is launching "clean" nuclear power generation operations in the U.S. and elsewhere through the Toshiba Group. Toshiba is also working to create a more efficient design for thermal power systems to limit greenhouse gas emissions. And finally, they are refining their hydroelectric power systems to achieve greater performance standards.

For product lines and the corresponding production processes, Toshiba will continue to develop mitigation strategies that reduce environmental impacts of and from their products. Better products and product materials will be used in design to reduce toxins and will likely also reduce waste streams by reusing recycled materials. Green packaging will play a major role in greening Toshiba as well.
