The Geo Metro: Back from the Dead

When I first moved to Boston, one of my roommates was still driving his 1996 Geo Metro hatchback. It was purple and horrible.

I've ridden bicycles with better acceleration. If you rode for more than 30 minutes, the rocky suspension left you with bruises on your backside, and passing was an exercise in futility.

He took off the plates and left it on the street when the Maryland registration expired, and a Commonwealth of Massachusetts tow truck took care of the rest.

Turns out he might have wanted to hold on to it. Now that gas $4/gallon gas is an accepted reality, the Metro is hotter than it’s ever been. Even the latest issue of Wired (you know, the infamous “hey, look at us! We’re counter-counter cultural” issue) called out a used Metro as the greenest automotive option for eco-savvy consumers.

Yes, all because of towering gas prices, the Geo Metro joins Apple as another mid-90s dud and former Simpsons Joke, returned to glory in the new millennium.

I do not believe the previous comment. Metro 3 cylinders be gettin more than 30 mpg. Your experience may have been for a metro that is running rich. They be gettin 40 mpg in town.
