Sport-Utility Bicycle Offers Low-Cost Cargo Carrying

surly's big dummyLooking to kick that four-dollar a gallon habit this summer, but can’t seem to make an alternate form of transport work in your daily life? Maybe you need to try a Big Dummy.

Manufactured by Surly, a near-legendary bicycle company based just outside of Minneapolis the Big Dummy made a huge splash at its introduction last year. Arguably the first production (i.e. not custom built) cargo bike in the United States, at least in the past decade, the Big Dummy gives you the ability to handle car-sized cargoes on a comfortable, easy to ride bike.

Loved across the Internet, the Big Dummy is a quick-sellout each time Surly sells a new batch. So with word just out that some new frames will be released this August-September, you might want to try and put in a reservation with your local bike shop before they sell out again, or, if you don’t want to drop over $1000 for a full-on cargo frame, look into snagging an xtracycle conversion kit to turn your everyday ride into a lean, mean, cargo-carrying machine.
