Top Urban Planning Graduate Programs Ranked
For the future urban planners among you, hark! Urban planning website Planetizen has produced (possibly the only) rankings of urban planning graduate programs in the US.
Grad programs in traditional fields like law, medicine and engineering are ranked more commonly than urban planning. However urban planning is growing in importance as climate change is increasingly linked in a fundamental way to city design.
The top ten schools are:
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
2. University of California, Berkeley
3. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
4. Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey
5. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
8. University of California, Los Angeles
9. University of Southern California
10. University of Pennsylvania
The Planetizen guide includes a comprehensive list of the hundred ranked schools school profiles, as well as an in-depth look at the field. Planetizen sought the advice of consultants, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning and conducted a broad survey of students and professionals to determine the results (Their methodology is also included in the text). The guide can be ordered here, and prospective candidates can browse a free list of urban planning graduate programs here.
