Georgia Grows Green Industry
Many states are trying to lure in green businesses with various incentives, in the hopes of developing green collar jobs. Georgia just landed 100 of those coveted jobs, with Suniva.
The solar power company is building its first manufacturing plant in Gwinnett County, Georgia. But several states are actively courting Suniva, hoping to get dibs on future plants. Those states include New Mexico, Massachusetts, Florida, Arizona and Nevada, all of whom are willing to offer incentives in order to pick up a few of those coveted green collar jobs.
Georgia was a logical first home for Suniva. The company was founded by Ajeet Rohatgi at Georgia Tech, and Rohatgi considers the school a phenomenal resource to consider when setting up that first plant. Suniva’s factory will be producing efficient solar cells at a fairly inexpensive price point. Having Georgia Tech’s help is going to make that process easier.
The real question is how far various states will go to pick up green jobs. Plenty have offered pretty impressive incentive packages in the past to a variety of industries and we’re likely to see that sort of package again. But will green industries — some of which are location-sensitive — take the deal?
