Got Wind: Powering the Party
Just about everyone I know takes their cell phone with them everywhere — even off to festivals and campouts where the chance that they’ll be able to charge their phones are nil. Got Wind, along with cell phone service provider Orange, have a new way to handle big outdoor events.
At last year’s Glastonbury Festival — a music festival where thousands of people descend on the Vale of Avalon, England, where there is plenty of nature but very few cell phone charging options — Got Wind and Orange teamed up to provide a tent where visitors could charge their phones. The entire operation was wind-powered and got plenty of attention for its unique orange tent. But the partnership plans to dwarf last year’s service at the next festival.
The next generation of the cell phone charging tent will be nearly 23 feet tall, incorporating a wind generator as well as solar panels. The facility will generate enough power to charge 100 cell phones an hour, as well as store leftover energy in batteries. And this recharging tent isn’t the final product: Got Wind is looking to provide even bigger and better power stations for large events in the future — definitely an improvement over noisy, inefficient generators!
