Will Air Travel Go the Way of Derrie-Air?
The website Derrie-Air satirically argues in favor of adjusting air ticket prices according to the weight of the customer. The fact is, forcing travelers to pay by the pound might be an effective means of curbing our air-travel habit. It might, however, also trigger a flood of lawsuits.Derrie-Air threw some people for a loop, but points to important issues in air travel, such as whether the weight of onboard snacks justifies a higher price or if it would be preferable to fast in the name of frugality. In reality, many air travelers are incensed by new baggage restrictions that require a fee for stowing anything more than a carry-on; for 50 years we've been accustomed to flying our bags with us for free.
Is this new trend green? Is it logical? Would the pay-by-the-pound scheme force us to lose inches before our next vacation? Who knows. But at least it’s controversial and has people talking. Air travel has already suffered enormous business losses, as many customers (41 million) avoid it these days due to the dual sting of inconvenience and high cost.
