Energy-Sipping TVs

Consumers don’t just want energy-sippers in the driveway. Mitsubishi is working to provide home electronics requiring less energy as well. The company’s new LaserVue TV meets that goal.

A large plasma screen TV can use 450 watts of electricity. The LaserVue TV — a laser TV rather than an LCD or plasma unit — requires less than 200 watts. That’s a major improvement over comparable units. Mitsubishi’s claims for the television are impressive. They cite figures that the laser TV requires one-half of the power needed to run an LCD.

The LaserVue hasn’t quite hit the market yet. It will go on sale later this year. The first model available will be 65 inches, with a 73-inch model coming available soon after. These TVs will be thicker than LCDs with a depth of about 10 inches. They will still be impressively thin, especially to those viewers who still remember CRTs.

There’s very little information about the manufacturing process for the LaserVue so far. Mitsubishi is keeping it fairly quiet. There are some hopes, though, that it might be an improvement on the production of plasma and LCD screens, known for potentially hazardous. Either way, though, the energy needs of the LaserVue are a clear improvement over plasma and even LCD televisions.
