Biofuels in Search of Pumps

Lawrence, Kansas: Home to the state’s only hydroelectric plant, the state’s only abolitionist history, and now one of the nation’s few flex fuel stations.

Zarco 66 will sell flex blends of biodiesel and ethanol in an environmentally-friendly station, hoping to set an example for distribution in the U.S.

There has been lots of research on producing ethanol and alternative fuels, when another significant, yet under-reported problem is breaking into the distribution chain, currently locked down by fossil industries. Getting the correct infrastructure and supply chain in place for alternative fuels is about as important -- or arguably more so -- than the fuel itself. The trick is to coordinate distribution infrastructure development with fuel that is scaled up enough to supply the stations.

Scott Zaremba, owner of a network of gas stations in the Lawrence area, explained that it took 30 percent  more capital to develop the Zarco station than his others, but he is confident that the investment will find returns quickly. Zaremba's station is going to be outfitted with energy-efficient lighting and powered by solar panels AND a wind turbine. The Zarco Station’s sales are tracked by the EPA as a test kitchen for national sales.  I can't think of any reason consumers across the nation would say "no" to price relief.
