GM to Build Largest Rooftop Solar Project on Earth
![]()
GM is such an interesting company. It can be good for businesses to endure the type of shakeup GM is suffering through right now; it is sometimes the only way to spur the necessary -- even radical -- institutional change required to stay competitive. Even amid whispered rumors of bankruptcy, GM is pushing ahead with a new, green attitude, including installation of what will be the largest rooftop solar array on Earth.
GM is onto something in working to mitigate its building-based energy costs as well as greening its vehicle offerings. Buildings and transportation occupy the top two slots in national greenhouse gas output. It’s very cool that some of GM’s US locations and warehouses already provide half their own energy. The Spain project will cover a stunning two million square feet of roof on GM's Figueruelas, Zaragoza plant, providing 12 megawatts of energy. Maybe it will seem ordinary, or even modest in the future, but now a 122 MW solar project is almost unbelievable. That’s 5,000 houses worth of electricity. Now that I have worked a little in solar and understand what a deal like that means, I'm extremely impressed by this effort by GM
I really hope that GM pulls through. I don’t want the company to go bankrupt. I want it to pull itself back up so that we can see how far GM's commitment to environmental protection extends past hard times.
