UK Prime Minister Urges Britons Not to Waste Food
I think by this point, it’s fair to say that the quest for a green lifestyle has permeated nearly every aspect of popular culture in the developed world. From Dunkirk to DC, advice columns and message boards are bombarded by questions and opinions about eco-friendly choices. Hand dryer vs. towels. Gas stoves vs. electric. MacBook vs. Think Pad.
While I agree with the findings of most of these columns, all these questions require fairly intensive amounts of research, and thousands more inquiries probably go unanswered. Aren’t there ever any easy solutions?
According to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the answer is yes: stop throwing away food. Aside from decomposing into carbon dioxide in landfills when it could be fueling human beings—or more efficient yet, human beings on bicycles—the unused food makes the carbon released in its making and shipping emitted for naught, stresses the world’s food supply, and pushes governments world wide away from biofuel research and production.
It’s a good suggestion from Brown, but he might want to add that avoiding wastefulness is just one of hundreds of simple steps every family can take to increase their sustainability.
