Clinton Backs Indian Solar Project

The Clinton Foundation is supporting what will be the world's largest solar project. The Business Standard is reporting that President Bill Clinton's foundation is making plans to help the government of the Indian state of Gujarat to develop the Integrated Solar City project. The project's estimated cost is close to $5 billion. The Clinton Foundation reportedly has $12 billion in assets available to fund green energy projects.

The Integrated Solar City project will provide five gigawatts of solar power, as well as manufacture solar materials. Government officials envision a city where the raw materials for solar panels and other power needs -- as well as the manufacturing -- come from the city itself. This would reduce the overall cost of solar energy, as fewer materials would need to be shipped in from outside the area. Two Gujarat cities are currently under consideration for the project's location: Kutch and Banaskantha. Gujarat is part of India's Arabian Sea coast; Banaskantha is the northernmost part of the state and Kutch makes up the northern part of the coastline.

The Gujarat government plans to have John Byrne, a member of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change team, manage the project.
