Eco-Social Living: The 21st Century Lifestyle

What does it mean to live in the 21st century? While that may imply various things like doing business in a global economy, blogging in Web 2.0, and doing what you can to save a few bucks, eco living is certainly a part of it.

Eco living is about living in harmony with the environment and a great way to learn or update your sustainability digs is through social networking. Probably the most vibrant example of how social networking and eco living fall hand-in-hand is through Al Gore. Not only has Gore focused on climate change mitigation, but also social collaboration at Current. In fact, sustainable living as so much of a social aspect that the “United Nations describes it as commitment to the provision of a secure environmental, social, and economic future.”

Check out ways that social networking and sustainability coincide:

  • Presidential environmentalism: The presidential candidates have taken networking to new levels and both are pitching environmental platforms. Obama announced his vice presidential pick via text message and email. He is 100 percent dialed in with the times.  McCain and Obama are both developing plans to slow or attempt to reverse greenhouse gas contributions to climate change via new energy policies and the creation of green collar jobs.  Eco-conscious voters defiantly have some things to vote about.
  • Generating clean power:  It is much easier and cost effective today than say, five years ago, to generate clean power. By the dozens, homes are generating their own energy through installation of solar panels and wind infrastructure.
  • Greening the job:  Not only is it trendy to live in an eco-friendly manner, it is important for companies to work sustainably. While it might be difficult to designate who is responsible for taking on the greening of your office, we must remember it is up to everyone to make small changes and form new habitats that add up to a green working company. To share your changes, post a tip on your company's intranet or collaboration page.
  •  A socially green career:  In order to make changes to our global behavior that protects our environment, we have to take to the streets to relay eco living messages. Public relations, public affairs, communications, and marketing based professionals are joining forces with environmental scientists, engineers and architects to green their careers and communicate with customers on a sales and grassroots level about environmental policies. In the future, we can expect more professionals, more messages.
