Luxury Buyers Look for Green Products
Luxury buyers are looking for green products when they make a purchase, according to a new report from Research and Markets. According to the report, "Green Marketing and the Luxury Consumer," buyers are thinking about larger issues -- like the environment --before buying luxury goods. The trend is especially prevalent among affluent women, a demographic that many luxury retailers consider their bread and butter.
The report cites a number of businesses that have been able to capitalize on their commitments to social responsibility. Designer Donna Karan — the DK in DKNY — is an exceptionally notable example. Her Urban Zen initiative combines natural and organic designs with philanthropy with a surprising level of success. Even historic retailers are taking note of the move to green priorities: Saks Fifth Avenue converted the lights illuminating its traditional Fifth Avenue Christmas display to LED. The move dramatically reduced the energy used for the display and gave a nice bump to Saks' eco-initiatives, including green products for sale through the high-end retailer's website.
Research and Markets' report recommends that luxury marketers start thinking green immediately. Sustainability isn't a trend that will disappear in a few months, and luxury consumers are beginning to expect that retailers provide socially-responsible products.
The report, Green Marketing and the Luxury Consumer, is available for purchase through Research and Markets' website.
