Army to Lease Thousands of EVs

We all know green is the U.S. Army's favorite color, and now they'll have the cars to match. The Army plans to lease a total of 4,000 neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) over the next three years, the largest deal of its kind. No word on whether they're available in camo.

Six vehicles, manufactured by Chrysler's Global Electric Motorcars division were shown off at a Fort Myer ceremony on Monday. Other manufacturers haven't missed their chance, though, with the Army soliciting help from other NEV makers in meeting their steep goal.

With an 8-hour charge providing only a 30 mile range and a top speed of 25 mph, these NEVs won't be manning the front lines. Rather, they'll be used for non-tactical base operations like security patrols and delivery services.

An NEV costs only about $460 to run annually compared to $1,200 in fuel for a standard gas-powered vehicle. The NEVs will save an estimated 11.5 million gallons of fuel and slash CO2 emissions by 115,000 tons over six years too.

The Army brass is planning a steady march toward cleaner overall operations, with increased use of battlefield alt-vehicles and renewable energy sources. As part of their Future Combat Systems (FCS), the Army is developing 8 hybrid-electric ground vehicles, which will cut gas costs and reduce the number of fuel convoys exposed in hostile territory. The Army is also working to increase its use of renewables such as geothermal, solar and biomass conversion.
