Sun Light and Power Goes Beyond Solar
The Berkeley, California company is powered by their own product: a 6.6 kilowatt photovoltaic system, kept warm by a solar thermal hot water system, and delivers goods with a fleet of bio-diesel trucks. Indoors, they use low-emitting volatile organic compound (VOCs) paint, used and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified lumber, used windows and doors, natural lighting when possible and fluorescent lighting elsewhere, and natural fiber and recycled carpeting. For suppliers, they choose green-minded businesses that provide sustainable clothing and organic food.
While Sun’s efforts are admirable, companies can take green practices even further: it is all in the details.
While it is important to use low-VOC paints on the walls, it is also important to look beyond the walls to eliminate VOCs from other office materials because no matter how small the source, multiple sources add up to a cumulative impact on the environment. Being truly green provides rewards beyond creating a safe level of indoor air quality for employees.
The rewards come from reducing the consumption of raw materials and feeding landfills. Reducing wastes, recycling, and raw material harvesting, are the returns on investment for companies. Companies that meet a new caliber of green are providing holistic answers.
