Facebook App Gets PCs to Tackle Climate Change

Flight climate change from the comfort of your jammies and laptop. Intel has just launched an application that uses an eco geek's available computing power for research projects.

Similar to previous distributing computing efforts that looked through radio data that searched for life on other planets, theProgress Thru Processors Facebook app allows Intel to utilize the processing power a laptop or desktop is not currently using and transfers that power for use to a few major research projects that are looking for ways to combat climate change and disease.

Research programs include ClimatePrediction.Net, a model that computes and predicts possible outcomes of climate conditions for the next 70 plus years, and Rosetta@home and Africa@home, projects that help find cures for diseases and create vaccines.

By allowing this social application, one can help save the world in every sense of the word. Finding additional computing power increases the available resources research projects can use to run more experiments, fix bugs, and achieve progress. Volunteers need not worry about offering their computing power; according to Intel will not slow down a computer's primary processing, according to Intel.

Can making a difference get any easier? Unlikely. This one time download can counteract the energy consumed, well, at least in eco points with Mother Earth. Intel Vice President and General Manager of Corporate Marketing, Deborah Conrad, sums it up well: "Small contributions made by individuals can collectively have a far-reaching impact on our world." Indeed.
