    Management Team

    Matter Network was co-founded by media veterans Michael Penwarden and John Gartner and veteran technology executive Curt Dowdy.

    Michael Penwarden is Chief Executive Officer. Prior to launching Matter Network, Michael served as Editor of Macworld Magazine, which received two consecutive Maggie Awards for "Best Computer Magazine" during his tenure. Prior to that, Michael was a co-founder and Executive Editor for the Ziff Davis Consumer Media Group. His work has appeared in Time and USA Today and he has been featured as a commentator on CNN, NBC and MSNBC. Michael also founded and captained Team Earth Island, an adventure racing team dedicated to inspiring environmental stewardship in underprivileged children.

    Curt Dowdy is Chief Operating Officer. As a Hewlett-Packard executive, Curt directed business strategies, product development, strategic partnerships and marketing for a variety of products and services. He also coached and helped procure $20 million in funding for three Internet startups that went on to larger success. Curt is additionally an award-winning film producer.

    John Gartner is Editor in Chief Emeritus of Matter Network, currently serving in an advisory role. He has been covering computer, Internet, and sustainable technologies for more than 20 years. He was an editor at Wired News and at TechTV, launched several websites for the TechWeb network, and has written for publications including Inc.com, Wired magazine, and Popular Mechanics. He is also an industry analyst for Pike Research.

    Cary Penwarden [+1 (415) 935-0212] manages Publisher and Network Partner relationships. Cary's background includes two decades of service to environmental issues, from directing the Whole Earth Festival in Davis, Ca. to facilitating Northwest Earth Institute courses on sustainable living at The Foundation for Global Community and leading Green Teams at Acterra. Cary is also an accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist who has scored numerous films, including Nourish featuring Michael Pollan (Worldlink: Education for a Green Economy) and Greening the Empire State Building (Rocky Mountain Institute). She has also coordinated and performed multimedia integration testing at Apple Computer, and analyzed music for the startup company Savage Beast (now Pandora).

    David Ferris is Managing Editor of Matter Network. David contributes to the Huffington Post and writes an award-winning energy column for Sierra magazine. His stories have also appeared in Men’s Journal, Macworld, Streaming Media and Wired News. David has corresponded for Reuters News Service in East Africa, worked as a staff writer for several newspapers and served as lifestyle editor of Sierra, the nation’s largest environmental news magazine.

    Debbie Holmgren [+1 (415) 967-1540] manages advertising sales. Debbie Holmgren’s business development/sales career spans over two decades, several mediums (digital, mobile, social networking, etc.) and a multitude of markets (IT, consumer, finance, electronics, etc.). Debbie began her business development career in the sustainability and cleantech space while acting as VP of Business Development and Partnerships for VentureBeat, selling sponsorships to Accenture Smart Grid Services, Cisco, CPower, Mayfield Fund, Oracle, Southern California Edison for GreenBeat – a senior executive level dedicated to the Smart Grid that attracted former Vice President of the U.S Al Gore, as the keynote.
